A Man’s 101 Guide to Smelling and Feeling Superb: Introduction

Your days of having a home that whiffs of stale sports kit, last night’s dinner, and cheap deodorant are over my friend.

You see, I used to be just like you.

Although my home was clean and fairly tidy, I’d not given that much thought to making it smell as fine as possible. I’d bought scented candles as gifts but never really used them. I was sure they’d make the air in my place too sweet and sickly.

As you’ll find out below, it turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong.

With just a few scented candles and some simple, sustainable cleaning advice I reckon I can transform your home – and your life. I’ll make you feel happier, healthier, and more confident. All in under a week.

At this point, you’re probably asking. . .

What makes me such an expert?

Towards the end of last year, I had a few dates with someone I rather liked. She’s a stylish and successful career woman, with a super busy life. Although she loves everything luxurious and lovely-smelling, she has precious little time to pamper herself during the working week. With Christmas approaching quickly, I put her together a gift set from honest skincare.

A colleague had recommended honest to me. She told me their products are ethical, eco-friendly, and “gorgeous on your skin”. As such, they’re ideal for rewinding after a hectic day. Perfect present material for the lady in question.

Alas, and much to my disappointment, our promising romance fizzled out as December wore on. Which left me with a beautifully-wrapped set of candles, bath oils, and sleep mist looking lonely under my tree.

A few days after Boxing Day I headed out for a long hard run in wild weather, across the fields and farms of Worcestershire. As a cross country athlete, this is my idea of heaven. Fifteen muddy miles of driving rain and bone numbing cold, followed by a piping hot bath afterwards. With a mug of strong sweet tea to round things off nicely.

When I got back home that morning I followed my usual routine. I turned on the bath taps, and wandered into the kitchen to make my drink. Then, as I heard the kettle whistling away on the range, an idea struck me.

Why not try those presents from honest myself?

The results changed my life.

I poured a few drops of Relax Bath + Body Oil into the steaming water and settled down for my customary long soak. The bath smelt great, and you could feel the ingredients bringing my smashed muscles back to life. In short, I could have stayed in there all day.

Now, it’s important to stress that I have no commercial links with honest. I don’t get freebies, and we don’t stock them on this site. But within a few drops of bath oil I was hooked. Stupid as it might sound, I began to realise why products like this were so popular.

Later, I lit the Dark Patchouli candle while I was doing my stretching before bed. It smelt ace. Then I sprayed Marjoram + Clary Sage Sleep Mist on my pillow at “lights out”. That night I slept like a log. On my early morning run I felt refreshed and raring to go – despite the fact it was blowing a gale.

Since then I’ve spent hundreds of hours learning all about men’s scents and fragrances.  Wherever I go now people – including total strangers – tell me I smell fantastic. It’s become an ongoing joke with all my friends and colleagues.

I’ve had glamorous older ladies in M&S Food Hall approach me to tell me I smell “delicious”.  Uber drivers have asked me to write down the name of my aftershave for them. One charming woman I met in France bought the same aftershave as me for her husband, so that he could “smell like me”. Sounds crazy, but it’s true.

Visitors are now as complimentary about my house, which I’m in the middle of renovating from scratch. (Sandalwood, patchouli, and Danish Oil. An unbeatable mix IMO). I’ve also made the garage my main entrance to the house after my runs, and not the porch. Now people aren’t greeted by the smell of my filthy trainers when they arrive. Simple things maybe, but certainly effective.

So here’s my promise to you.

I’m going to share everything I’ve learned with you about men’s scents and fragrances in a series of short, practical blog posts.

Naturally, we’ll start with the very basics. With three scented candles, a box of bicarbonate of soda, and some sustainable cleaning tricks and tips.

All will be revealed here next week. See you then?
