How to kick-start a Zero Waste kitchen

There is so much we can do to give a little more love to Mama Earth! With even the smallest change in our homes we can make the World a better place. This article is for everyone who’s just embarking on a plastic-free journey and playing with the idea of Zero Waste living. Don’t forget, Zero Waste is an ideal that we work towards by simplifying our usual ways of doing things and reducing the amount of single-use products in our day to day lives. It is not going to happen overnight and may never happen at all – but if you’re here because you want to do something for a better future, you’re doing the right thing.

How to start a Plastic-Free, Zero Waste Kitchen?

In setting up a Zero Waste kitchen, efficiency is key. It should bring you peace and ease in meal prep and it should bring joy to task that you usually consider a chore. In the kitchen Zero Waste will not only save time and will free us from unhealthy habits, but will save us energy and money as well.

Here are 5 easy steps to kick-start a Plastic-Free Kitchen:

  • Ditch single-use plastic bags and invest in a reusable Tote bag
  • Stop buying pre-packed fruits and veggies, instead, shop at Farmers Markets and use reusable produce bags
  • Keep food fresh in silicone bags or glass boxes
  • Use beeswax paper to ditch single-use kitchen foil
  • Invest in plastic-free cleaning products that are organic and biodegradable so you don’t produce waste at the end of their lifecycle

On that last point, I’ve been experimenting with different plastic-free alternatives to be able to bring you the absolute best of zero waste products that were out there. For me, it is important to mentally stay in the 21st century and not feel like we time-travelled back to the 1980s when switching to organic variations. These products are my very favourites that are not only organic but will take your plastic-free kitchen game to the next level.

100% Organic and Biodegradable Loofah sponges

An annual, subtropical vine in the Cucurbitaceae family, luffa is a lush plant with large leaves, buttery yellow flowers, and fruit that looks like giant, 2-foot-long cucumbers. The young, edible fruits — which taste like a cross between a cucumber and a zucchini — can be harvested when only a few inches long for stir-fries, chutneys and soups. When left to mature and dry on the vine, the fruit becomes quite large and the edible flesh transforms into a fibrous woven skeleton with brown skin and rattling seeds. This textured skeleton is what we use as a sponge.

These eco-friendly loofah dishwashing sponges are 100% compostable. Loofahs are soft enough so they will not scratch your pots, pans or dishes, yet have enough scrubbing power to get all the grime and grease off! They are soft, but strong, extremely useful and lovable: an absolute catch! When finished using them, simply add them to the compost.

This product is something I’d personally never used before I got to know the Zero Waste Movement. But since then it’s been part of my every day washing up routine and been a very loyal friend in my kitchen. These brushes are ethically made in the Black Forest of Germany using traditional methods, dating back more than 140 years. As the bristles are 100% natural, they don’t release microplastics into the environment, which is exactly why it needs to be in every Plastic-Free Kitchen. Once the bristles are worn out, you can remove the head and easily replace it. Replacement heads are available in the webshop upon request.

These awesome dish cloths are made from a blend of cotton and natural cellulose. They are so super absorbent, they can soak up 15x to 20x their own weight! They are machine washable up to 200 times and when you’re done with them, they can go in the compost. Each Dish Cloth can replace around 17 rolls of paper towel over its lifespan and most people can run the same cloth for around 6 months with regular use and washing.

I’m not joking, this is The Perfect plastic-free dish cloth for any kitchen.
